OVERVIEW
In late June 2010, world leaders gathered for the G-20 Toronto Summit to discuss the global financial system and the world economy. The Toronto G-20 Summit was the most expensive ever with security alone costing an estimated $1 billion. The Toronto police department retained Motorola for its critical communications and Motorola called on BATS for their innovative broadband solutions expertise.
Motorola, in conjunction with the Toronto police department was charged with finding a flexible and efficient deployment solution to enable the rollout of a secure broadband communications network within a compressed timeline.
SOLUTION
BATS provided a logistically flexible, quick deployment solution for this high-security environment. BATS technicians set-up the AMATS-300 quick deploy system integrated with a 4.9 GHz Point-to-Point (PTP600) Wireless Broadband Radio from Motorola. The BATS unit was positioned on a semi-trailer that could be easily repositioned. The BATS system maintained a T1 link between the mobile unit and a fixed unit stationed on top of the U.S. delegate’s hotel, keeping authorities in constant contact. The BATS system eliminated the need to re-aim/align the radio when the mobile command unit was deployed, allowing the establishment of a connection between the mobile unit and fixed point in minutes. Without BATS groundbreaking technology it typically requires thirty minutes to manually align radio connections. BATS technology was critical to maintaining the high-security of the G-20 Summit. As leaders discussed the ongoing global recession, BATS maintained critical communications for the Toronto police department. Despite violent protests, the arrest of more than 1000 protesters and a force of approximately 20,000 police from different agencies, security communications went off without a hitch. The network connection performed flawlessly throughout the conference.
